The first Caribbean Odyssey boat makes landfall in Barbados

At midday on Tuesday, the Swiss yacht Olena squeezed past the huge bulk of the cruiseship Pullmantur into the small craft area of Bridgetown Harbour after a 13-day passage from the Cape Verde Islands.

According to Captain Stéphane Chappuis the 2020-mile passage has been a mixture of strong winds and rough seas, a few days of calmer trade wind sailing, a blown spinnaker, couple of lost fish that snapped their undersized gear, and a continuous fight to clear their rudders of seaweed that covered large areas of the ocean surface.

This phenomenon has also been reported by other yachts and is presumably a consequence of climate change, as the ocean waters are getting increasingly warmer.

Gwenda Cornell greets the Olena crew on arrival.

No arrivals are expected tomorrow, with Sandro, Serenity and Tubalcain expected on Thursday, Sina on Friday and Wilderness on Saturday.
