Antonio:

I have to say that crossing the oceans is a lot more civilized that used to be years ago. It is very well to say that the boats were simpler to maintain and we were formed in more direct relation with nature etc etc. but to be able to have a real shower every day, plenty of fridge to carry quality food, the possibility of keeping in touch daily by email, all this makes it more approachable by many families that otherwise would not have the strength to experience it the traditional way.

And catamarans do not roll!! This is my first crossing without rolling and I love it! Most of the time bottles and glass and people stay on the table and chairs, it is really more relaxing.

The coffee is ready and I go for my last slice of apple cake.

Nothing in particular.

A full 24 hours with no particular events. And yet I feel pretty busy, like there is just about the right amount of time available.

I would be lying to say that nothing have happened, though. We gybed, meaning we’re now heading directly to Martinique. Also, the moon is back, giving the night shifts some life – having something to stare at.

The big happening of the day (except for jack-ass breakfast and warm dinner) is when dad checks the mail on the SSB radio. Coordinates of all the boats are drawn on a notepad, as if we’re making plans on how to win the race (not that there’s anything in particular we can do against those large catamarans), and reading mails from family and friends brightens up the day.

I’m slowly closing up on the third book and find reading the perfect time investment while at sea. There’s plenty of time to get absorbed, and plenty to reflect.

Exploring health and building community

As the evening came along, we all jumped outside to get some fresh air of hope and listen to the story of the night. This time it was Sue’s turn. She spoke passionately and beautifully about community spirit, drawing on her experience at the all-women’s protest in Greenham Common in the 80s. Her presence here is like an embodiment of the endurance of female power, and she eloquently helps us all to feel the strength that can and needs to be drawn from our shared journey. She reads us Joanna Macy and Anita Barrow’s translation of Rilke by moonlight, and we all get goosebumps…

Papy Jovial

Same old, same old

To write the blog, while sitting at the chart table, I have to press my right leg against the underneath of the table by pushing as hard as I can on the floor, to try and minimize sliding sideways. Then I have to grab the keyboard with my left hand to stop it from flying away towards the galley. There is not much that I can do about the mouse but pick it up from time to time from the floor.

Last night Jean-Paul was ejected from his bunk and landed against a bulkhead with his left knee and hurt himself. I crashed again in the aft cabin hitting the starboard bulkhead with my back hurting myself again in an area already sensitized by the previous crashes. We are both fed up with this constant heavy rolling. The wind has calmed down but not the seas.

Other than that, it is warm and sunny, the water is a magnificent blue and we entertain ourselves by timing the flights of the flying fishes. With the forecast calling for calmer winds we might only arrive on the 8th.
Stay tuned.
