TenerifeCountrySpain (Canary Islands)FlagVisited byDescription & main attractionsTenerife is the largest island in the Canarian archipelago, with the highest mountain in Spain, the Pico de Teide which bears the name Teide after a god worshipped by the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands before the arrival of the Spanish. Surrounding the high plateau of the rocky interior is a National Park marked most notably by the jagged lava outcrops known as Los Roques. Elsewhere the island reveals a richness of contrasting scenery from high pine forests to lush valleys in the north and sun-baked beaches of the south favoured by tourists. Transport links to Europe and the other Canary Islands are very good thanks to the popularity of the island as a holiday destination. The mountainous interior naturally has an effect on sailing conditions with wind acceleration zones to be found at the western and south eastern ends of the island. The north easterly trade winds are especially noticeable along the east coast while to the south and west the island’s lee makes for lighter winds and sunny days. The island hosts several marinas outside of the capital Santa Cruz. Useful Links
