Sue and Howard Chambers made landfall at Marina Lanzarote this afternoon after an epic voyage from London that lasted over five weeks.
One of the two boats that took the symbolic start from London on 31 July – the other was the Swiss catamaran Maisie – Sundowner encountered serious engine problems on the first leg from London to Falmouth and had divert to Plymouth. Extensive repairs on their engine meant that they could not make it in time for the start of the next leg from Falmouth.
Having missed not just the start but also a favourable weather window, they had to wait in Falmouth for several days before crossing the Bay of Biscay to La Coruña.
They continued to Lisbon and completed in record time the final leg to Lanzarote as strong north-easterly winds blowing occasionally 25 knots ensured consistently high speeds for their 39 foot boat. They are now happy to relax in the company of the other Barbados 50 boats that arrived here in the last couple of weeks.
Barbados 50 is sponsored by Barbados Tourism Marketing, Tenerife Port Authority, Promotur Turismo Canarias, the Patronato de Turismo de Lanzarote and the European Sports Destination.
