But we are not feeling them yet as we are still in the disturbed area behind the Cape Verde Islands. Jimmy Cornell kept emphasizing that we need to be 100 miles clear of the islands before their influence can’t be felt anymore. That should be during our night watches – so we are hopeful it will be soon.

At first we had nice winds from behind as we shot through the channel between two of the Cape Verde islands, then that wind died and we motored, then we got 20 knot winds on the nose out of the west – really had to question that one given we were expecting east winds….we started coming up with all kinds of theories among us about why we were getting this miserable west wind. But then we’d just look at the big talle Verde islands looming behind us and remember Jimmy’s words.

Since then we have been rocking and rolling, changing sails frequently to adjust to the every changing wind direction, sometimes motoring when the winds die down to almost nothing. We have 3 other Odyssey boats (Perseverance, Baloo, Wings) within VHF radio range (so within about 24 miles) and one right along side us that isn’t from the Odyssey but contacted us to chat. So we have company out here.

The guys just made yet another sail change to adjust for winds that are now coming from behind…..the right direction for the trades, but still kind of light. They are chattering amongst themselves with reaffirming positive comments such as, ‘winds are filling in nicely’, ‘yes looks like they are finally coming around’…..All’s well on board.

From Libertad’s blog

About Libertad

Day 9 – Sunday 17 January 2016

Balou

Mindelo in 48 Stunden
