Starting in\u00a0Key West<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a010 January\u00a02015, the boats headed for\u00a0Montego Bay<\/strong> in Jamaica and continued across the Caribbean Sea to the San Blas Islands<\/strong>. They were joined there by those who started from Martinique<\/strong> on 18 January 2015.<\/p>\n

The combined fleet spent one week among the islands of this archipelago, home to the Guna community.<\/p>\n

Preparations for the transit of the Panama Canal<\/strong>\u00a0were\u00a0completed at Shelter Bay Marina<\/a>, a well-equipped facility with a boatyard, hoist and range of repair shops. As docking or mooring facilities for visiting cruising boats are very limited on the Pacific side, Shelter Bay<\/em> is a convenient place to prepare the boat and crew for the onward passage to the Galapagos Islands<\/strong>. This started immediately on completion of the Panama Canal transit.<\/p>\n

The Galapagos landfall was\u00a0Baquerizo Moreno on the island of San Cristobal. The fleet was\u00a0based there for a few days before sailing over to Puerto Ayora, the main settlement and touristic hub of the archipelago. Day excursions to the some of the islands of this world renowned nature reserve were\u00a0organised from those two ports.<\/p>\n

A 3000 mile long passage took\u00a0the boats to the Marquesas<\/strong>, with landfall at Atuona on the island of Hiva Oa.<\/p>\n

This scenic outpost of French Polynesia was\u00a0a suitable finale for this truly Pacific Odyssey.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
