We decided to go for a broad reach, which meant disassembling most of our lovingly constructed pole erection. This turned out not to be such a good idea, as we started making less ground towards our destination. We realised this by the middle of the night, but we were too tired to make the right decision, or indeed any decision, about what to do. We just left it until morning.

Neither of us are too good at making the sort of mistakes, which with a little effort and thought can be avoided. This was clearly one of those mistakes, so there was a bit of an atmosphere for a while.

Anyway, all is well again now. The 1st mate and master tactician is getting his inspiration from reading Paul Heiney’s “Last Man Across” – an account of how he came last in a single handed transatlantic race. While the skipper is reading “In the Heart of the Sea” by Nathaniel Philbrick a story of endurance and bravery in the savage sea. It will come as no surprise gentle reader when I tell you that Grandad was on watch when the autohelm decided to stop for a nap. Having leapt out of my skipper’s hammock to restore order to the electronics ( CTRl-ALT-DEL) – I find that master mariner has taken the boat on a full great circle route, wrapping my prize tuna line and lure around the rudder. The line that has seen so much action from Porto to Lanzarote. The line that may mean the difference between curry and sushimi for the next two weeks. Oh, the crew can be so cruel.

This, on top of Grandad waking me early, when my off-watch wasn’t yet over. He was confused again by the simple notion of timezones. I even wrote out a little aide memoire for him to be able to calculate the difference from ship’s time or GEC, subract two H-ours, to get local time or HAC. This, as you can easily spot provides the handy mnemonic “G”o to “H”ell in a “H” “C”art.

From blog.mailasail.com/sventerprise

Pete

149 miles in 24 hours the best yet! I can’t see that being matched for a while as the wind has dropped considerably and is forecast to stay light for the next few days.

Our electronics threw a fit in the night, causing us to complete a full circle and lose control of the boat. I was on watch and rushed down to the computer help desk. You’ll never guess what their solution was. Yep. you got it, “lets turn everything on and off again” said the off watch tech guru.

Needless to say this worked and electronics are fine now. Unfortunately the confusion during the computer fit caused the boat to go round in a circle and catch Captain Bligh’s fishing line. The more cynical amongst us might say this is no great loss. Despite fish literally throwing themselves onto our deck, old John West has failed to get even a nibble on his expensive tackle

Not much more to say. It’s 30 degrees, sunny, and we are sailing along nicely, life could be worse on the whole. Accordingly, and with consummate logic, 1st Mate decided we should put the bimini down so “we could see the stars”. Pointing out that it was day time and that stars come out at night did not deter 1st Mate. Further appeals to sanity by pointing to the one gigantic star that will fry your whatever off and which happens to be shining right now also had no impact. The bimini is down and now I am down below. Its too hot to go in the cockpit ! Except for 1st Mate who is stubbornly refusing to admit any error and looks like a sweating marshmallow with factor 50 daubed all over his face.

Yesterday was a disaster in the fishing department. Following 1st Mate’s deliberate sabotage by sailing the boat over my 40lb tuna line; and using the rudder as a boat hook. I had to cut away 500 ft of precious line and lure – all gone to the bottom of the ocean. I then used my handy fishing rod. The lures then proceeded to spin around each other forming a tennis ball sized blob of nylon line and hooks. It would make a talking point for a tuna with an artistic bent – certainly as interesting as an unmade bed – but for inciting a tuna to have lunch – perhaps not.

Our pre-occupation on the technical front is power or lack of. We should have about 220A per day to use to power things like auto-helms, chart plotter and so on. But instead we have 36A. This means running the generator and using diesel, more often each day than I anticipated. The increase in temperature would account for some of the increased inefficiency of the battery bank but not all. We have no solutions as yet.

Having past the half way point at 0330 last night, I have been promised a celebration meal – which does not include the word curry. I had to stop the chef raiding the wine cellar and tipping a bottle of Grand vin de Bordeaux into the stew – he says I am a “rosbeef” and don’t understand Provencal cuisine.

Menu del dia: Lamb Cooked in Rose Wine with Herbs Provencal.

From blog.mailasail.com/sventerprise

Pete

So, exciting day today; a record distance run in the last 24 hours, and the passing of the half way point!

From tipunchcapsurlescaraibes.net

About Ti Punch

Mercredi Soir

ETA 3 Dec in Martinique

Heidi 2.0

Left Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Tuesday 1 December.

Iris

Stopped in Sal, Cape Verdes, to fix Iridium and computer problems.

Vitavi

Stopped in Mindelo to fix rigging problems.
