As the ice thickened about us, and leads became less <br \/>\nfrequent, we decided to turn back to Lancaster Sound. While making our <br \/>\nway back through Admiralty Inlet, we soon found that the ice was packing <br \/>\nus in with no clear leads ahead.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" alt=\"Nera sitting on the ice\" src=\"http:\/\/cornellsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/m_IMG_1713.jpg\" width=\"600px\" height=\"400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nera sitting on the ice<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nSea water, due to the salt it contains, freezes at a lower temperature <br \/>\nthan fresh water. The air and sea temperature were very low while we <br \/>\nwere in the ice: around 0\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>The ice which was around us ranged from bergy bits to ice islands which <br \/>\nare very deep. It also ranged from very blue ice which sat on the <br \/>\nsurface and ice that was practically see through which made it difficult <br \/>\nto discern from the water around.<\/p>\n<p>The ice surrounding us was multi-year ice and pockets of first year ice <br \/>\nwhich was still frozen.  Multi-year ice stays frozen for the whole year <br \/>\nand in summer, breaks up and drifts on top of the sea.  During summer, <br \/>\nmulti-year ice loses its top layer, while in the winter, the water <br \/>\nbeneath it cools and freezes on the bottom of the ice.
