For the 50 foot catamaran the London landfall marked the successful end of an epic 1500 miles voyage that had started from Lanzarote in the Canary Islands over one month ago. Last autumn, while in Lanzarote at the start of a planned word voyage, Rita and Martin heard about a transatlantic event planned for 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Barbados independence. The aim of this commemorative event caught their imagination and they decided to change their plans and join the Barbados 50 Odyssey at its symbolic start in London.

The British yacht Sundowner is the other boat to join the start from London with more boats joining along the way to Lanzarote, in the Canaries. Along the route there will be intermediate stops at Falmouth, La Coruna, in Spain, Porto and Lisbon in Portugal.

Thirty-six boats have so far confirmed their participation in Barbados 50 and it is expected that the symbolic figure of 50 participants will be reached in time of the start of the transatlantic leg to Barbados.

Barbados 50 is sponsored by Barbados Tourism Marketing, Tenerife Port Authority, Promotur Turismo Canarias and the  Patronato de Turismo de Lanzarote.
